Sad news indeed, a dear and gentle man, excellent father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, friend, true Grit and faithful Catholic, Peter Anthony Rafferty of fifth generation Irish-Canadian decent (and proud of every bit of his rich Irish heritage) died February 10, 2022 at the Moncton Hospital. Born in McAdam, N.B., son of Cecilia (Shields) Rafferty and John James (Pat) Rafferty. Predeceased by his loving wife Kaye (Peters) Rafferty, and brothers Jack, Richard (Dick) and Philip. Peter is survived by his son Brendon of Ottawa, daughter Ann (Steven) King of St. Catharines, and Shannon (Trevor) Terry of Riverview, along with his grandchildren Laura, Elizabeth and Andrew (Kirsten) King, and Catherine and Patrick Terry, and great grandchildren Aidan and Scarlett King as well as many nephews and nieces.

A man about town, you could often see him walking along Riverview’s Riverfront Park well into his late 80s. Not much for cooking, Peter was often the beneficiary of precooked meals from friends. His stove was the cleanest one in town, without a doubt. Peter loved history, especially genealogy, and wrote a book on the Rafferty clan, and worked with the late Father Peter McKee to create a map of the history of the Irish in NB. Peter spent his early working years in Montreal, where he was employed with Air Canada, and later transferred to Moncton. Peter retired from Air Canada after 35 years of service and he enjoyed every bit of the travelling perks. One of his favourite pastimes was having an occasional sip of the best Irish whiskey. Peter preferred to be busy, and busy to him meant being around people. Peter had tons of friends from all walks of life and political stripes. Red, Blue, Orange or Green, he had contact with people from them all. He even let them get a few words in, on occasion. He has been a member of a number of organizations during his lifetime: life Member of the Riverview Lions Club, Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus, Riverview Council 9270, and Fourth Degree Knight, former director of both the Jordan Life Care Centre and the Moncton Museum, former president of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association (Moncton Chapter), and was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Riverview.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center Home, 330 Whitepine Road Riverview (869-2007) on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, with parish prayers sharing of memories to take place at 7:30 PM from the funeral home. The funeral mass will be celebrated at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at 11 AM with Father Phil Mulligan presiding.
