Rod Hyslop of McNair Manor, 44 Beechwood Avenue in Moncton NB, passed away peacefully on February 2nd2023.

Born in Moncton, he was the son of Warren and Irma (Wilson) Hyslop and brother to the late Shirlee, Warren Jr. and Gloria.

Rod spent his youth in Moncton, Halifax and Bridgewater. He was very active in various sports and was a Golden Glove lightweight champion in boxing in his early teens. He had a passion for music as well and played in Cadet marching bands in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

In 1956 he met Audrey (Forbes) while both were living in Truro. They married in 1957, moved to Moncton and started a family, having two daughters, Cindy and Debbie. They remained together until Audrey’s passing is 2016.

Rod was a commercial traveler, mainly in the sale of marine equipment. He loved meeting new people and the scenery wherever his travels took him. He covered all territories from eastern Quebec to Newfoundland and by his own estimation, clocked over 1,000,000 miles in his career.

He remained active in sports while the girls were growing up in Riverview. He was the President and coach of the Riverview Kinsmen Track and Field Club and a past president of the New Brunswick Track and Field Association. He was a house league minor hockey referee, refereed Old Timers hockey and umpired Softball for over 19 years. He also umpired high school softball. He was very proud to have been invited and to participate in the Canadian Ladies Softball Championship in Quebec as an umpire. It is considered an honor to be considered for this tournament and at almost 80 years of age he took great pride in being considered and then to attend and participate as an umpire. Rod was also an avid golfer, enjoyed all the time he could with his golfing buddies on the courses in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Rod remained an avid music lover throughout his life. He belonged to and played with the New Brunswick Band Association. He founded his own dance band, The Rod Hyslop Orchestra. The band played weekend dances for over 25 years in the Greater Moncton area. Rod was a percussionist and had attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, USA to study percussion. Rod and Audrey also enjoyed square dancing during their years living in Bridgewater in the 1990’s. He took pride in the fact that Audrey sewed most of their square dance outfits.

Rod also had a great love of woodworking. He spent time in his workshops over the years and created pieces his family will enjoy for years to come.

Rod will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his grandchildren Lori Coull (Josh), Kelly Coull (Marc), Matthew Coull and Calvin Hyslop (Viki).

He treasured his great grandchildren Leah Coull, Alexa (Lexi) Hyslop, Max Hyslop, Shay Hyslop and Luca Lacenaire.

Rod is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as his treasured family on Audrey’s side of the family.

In keeping with Rod’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. The family will have a private graveside service at a later date.

In accordance with Rod’s wishes, donations can be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation or to Crohn’s research.
