Donald H. MacFarlane, 80, of Moncton passed away at the Moncton City Hospital on March 15, 2024, with his wife by his side.  Born in Moncton to the late Everett and Jessie (Christie) MacFarlane.  Don was retired from CN Rail with 31 years of service.  He was a proud member and Past Master of Acacia Lodge #49 F & AM, a member of the Frank H. Tingley #5 OES, the Atlantice Salmon Federation and the Miramichi Salmon Federation.  He was a 3rd generation volunteer firefighter.  A former member and Captain of  #4 Hose Company of the Moncton Volunteer Firefighters with 32 years of service, in honour of his bravery was  the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Don was a member of the first Pipe Band in Moncton, the  Greater Moncton Scottish Association where he was affectionately known as "the Bard" for his annual presentation of the Address to the Haggis.  He was a former member and President of the Perfect Circle FMCA Motorhome Club.

He was an avid golfer in his earlier years, playing to a 3 handicap and he scored a Hole in One in his 2nd year of playing.  A charter member of Mountain Ridge Golf Club and also of Catamount (Country Meadows) Golf Club.  His greatest outdoor enjoyment was fly-fishing for salmon, two of his favorite fishing destinations were Labrador and Larry’s Gulch.

Don had many hobbies that he excelled at, leather tooling, fly-tying, making wine, bowling.  He was an avid traveler in earlier years, including many RV trips all over U.S and Canada.  In more recent years the travels consisted of lengthy daytrips around the Maritimes.  Don was a genuine person who made everyone feel  welcome.

 

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Liz) Welling MacFarlane, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Bruce.

Don’s family will be receiving relatives and friends at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Rd., Riverview (506-869-2007) on Tuesday from 6-8 PM, with Acacia Lodge No.49 F&AM holding a masonic service at 5:45 PM. A service celebrating Don’s life will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at 11 AM. Donations to JDRF Canada or the memorial of the donors choice would be appreciated by the family.
