Gordon "Gordie" Allister MacDonald, age 80 formerly of Truro, passed away at The Moncton Hospital on July 23, 2024, surrounded by his family. Gordie was born in 1943, to the late Mary Boyd (MacLeod) and Donald MacDonald. Gordie is survived by his wife Donna (Dauphinee) of 54 years, daughters Dr. Erin (Patrick) Hemsworth of Moncton, Heather (Patrice) Vossier of Mexico City, grandchildren William, Charlotte, Laura, Benjamin and Victoria, nephews Donald Gordon and Richard Weld and niece Alex Davis. He was predeceased by his sister Heather Weld.

A dedicated educator for 30 years, he taught grade 8 and 9 science in exciting, inspiring and adventuresome ways. His inclusive approach sought to bring a hands-on experience to his students through innovative experiments such as launching rockets, hot air balloons, animatronics and field experiments. Starting the Science Fair at Truro Junior High was one of his many endeavors. He was proud to be described as an artistic Science Teacher. Former students often greeted him with happy tales of their science classes.

Cape Breton was his true home: school days in Sydney, summers in Boularderie and Aspy Bay.  Gordie loved the people, the beauty, fishing and treasure hunting. The cottage in Smeltbrook "Sunnd na Mara" brought him serenity. His love of nature and adventures in the underwater world looking for treasures was the inspiration for many stories to share with family and friends. Mazatlan, Mexico was his home away from home during years of retirement.

Gordie explored his artistic spirit in many ways, such as making metal sculptures of whimsical characters, building a 42-foot Cape Island fishing boat, renovating a farmhouse, restoring an 1880 Heritage home and building a hunting camp.  He was always looking at objects and reimagining what could be done with them.

Gordie is remembered by his family and friends for his warmth, exuberance for life, dedication to work and his Cape Breton sense of humour.

The support and care of the Nurses, Doctors and all staff of unit 3600 at The Moncton Hospital is greatly appreciated by his family.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will be held in the future.

Arrangements are entrusted to Cobb’s funeral Home and Cremation Center 330 Whitepine Road Riverview (506-869-2007).  Online condolences may be expressed at www.cobbsfuneralhome.ca
